IRCC announced new changes in the Canada post-graduation work permit (PGWP) effective from Feb 15, 2024.  If you are an Indian student and looking for admission in Canada for master's or higher degree then this article is important for you.

As Canada announced that students pursuing a master degree in Canada are eligible to apply for 3 years PGWP regardless of their master's duration. Please note your master minimum duration must be 8 months and above.  It means Now students can get 3 years PGWP if their master duration is less than 2 years.

It's critical to know that The length of the PGWP depends on the level and duration of your study program, as well as the expiry date of your passport, whichever comes first.

What is the new rule for PGWP?

To be eligible for a pgwp-canada-aptech-study-abroadpost-graduate work permit in Canada,  you must meet the following requirements

  1. You must have master's or doctoral degree from a designated learning institute of Canada (DLI).
  2. your study permit must have been valid at some point during these 180 days.
  3. You must maintain full-time status as a student in Canada during each semester of your study program

 

What do I do if my Canada study permit expires before applying for PGWP?

If your study permit will expire before you get your marks, you have 2 options. You can either

  • apply for a visitor record to stay in Canada longer or
  • leave Canada and apply for your PGWP

Is Canada stopping PGWP?

As per the IRCC announcement on January 22, 2024, international students who begin a study program at the Undergraduate level (including degree and diploma) will no longer be eligible for a post­graduation work permit upon completion of their undergraduate program. Moreover, Canada spouse open work permit will not be available for Undergraduate (including degree and diploma) students. This change will be implemented Starting September 1, 2024.
